Research Question

By the way, why are we doing this?

First off, Let’s go back to our origin, the research question. Our research question was “ How transparency vary in different positions in Pedder Bay?” But why do we have to know the transparency of water in Pedder Bay? Is it really worth to know? Of course it is worth! That’s why we are doing this.
When we came up this idea, we knew that transparency of water affect the photosynthesis of organisms. As you know, most of the oxygen that we breathe comes from the ocean. So, this is a really familiar topic to us. That’s why we are doing this. We think understanding transparency of water in Pedder Bay is a first step of understanding photosynthesis and how we breathe!

  1. Let me add some more information about the background of our project. Kenta talked about why we chose this topic. We were thinking about how we could examine one of the factors of the ocean which we could do experiments on. And after some options, we chose to investigate the transparency of the water. One of the reasons was, as I told before, we could have done some experiments if we had this topic. But the main reason was we were interested about the transparency of the water in the fact that water was transparent yet it reflected everything in its environment which we found interesting. As Kenta mentioned before, photoreceptors and photosynthetic pigments use the light that was transmitted through water for photosynthesis. From this we could understand that transparency of the water had a very important effect on the photosynthesis of the water plants and therefore the other living creatures in the ocean.
Then, we started to question if the transparency varied from places to another or were there any factors that affected the transparency. From all the discussions we had as a group we decided to examine whether the transparency of the water differentiates in different places.
Unfortunately, we could not have a wide range of places to see and make experiments. Therefore we made all of our experiments in Pedder Bay.
